SHIMLA, AUG 3. The Sutlej Jal Vikas Nigam Limited authorities manning the prestigious 1500-MW Nathpa Jhakri Power Project today heaved a sigh of relief as the artificial lake formed on the Indo-Tibet border did not burst and the water started receding gradually. "There is no danger to the project now and it functioned normally today with its full capacity", claimed H.K.Sharma, Executive Director of the Project at Jhakri. Mr. Sharma said even in case of a sudden burst at night the rise would be just a couple of meters and there would be sufficient time to take precautions as the site of lake was around 200 kms away from the project. The National Remote Sensing Institute experts in Hyderabad are also constantly monitoring the formation of an artificial lake in Tibet which can be extremely lethal to the Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Electric Project. This was disclosed to The Hindu by the Chairman- cum- Managing Director of the Sutlej Jal Vikas Nigam Limited, Mr. Y.N. Apparao, from Delhi on telephone, who is also in constant touch with the authorities in Hyderabad. Mr. Apparao assured that there was no need of a panic and the project, which was working at its full capacity, may not be shut. . He further claimed that no loss has been reported to the prestigious project so far and the preparations were on to deal with any untoward incidents. Meanwhile the people of the State have been warned to be vigilant on both the banks of the river Sutlej for the coming days. A high- level meting was held here yesterday to take the stock of situation. The Additional Chief Secretary, S.S.Parmar, who presided over the meeting said that a wide publicity was being given through announcements in AIR, TV and other media to warn the people of any eventuality in case dam burst and take precautionary measures such as move to safer places and be cautious day and night. It was also decided that wireless network along with both banks of the Satluj river from Sumdoh down ward to Bhakra be strengthened by deployment of more personnel so that timely information was passed on to people.
