Apple unveils iPod

NEW DELHI, AUG. 3. Targeted at music lovers, Apple today introduced its fourth generation iPod, portable digital music player, with Apple's patent pending scroll wheel, 12-hour battery life and a smaller design that can hold up to 10,000 songs. Apple also rolled out its iPod mini, the smallest portable music player ever which can store up to 1,000 CD-quality songs, at Rs. 20,500.

Apple had entered the Indian market early this year with its third generation iPod, which was available in three models through the company's channel partners in India. The new iPod in a 20GB model comes for Rs. 22,100 and can hold up to 5,000 songs and the 40GB model at Rs. 27,400 for 10,000 songs.

Longer battery life

"Besides reduced prices, the new iPod has longer battery life, one-handed navigation and new command in the main menu that gives users instant access to their music library," Apple Product Marketing Manager (Asia Pacific), E. Y. Yeo, told reporters here.

The products are targeted at music lovers as 10,000 songs mean 44,000 minutes of music, which is enough to last 25 years without repetition, he said.

iPod features Apple's patent pending auto-sync technology that automatically downloads an entire digital music library on to iPod and keeps it up-to-date whenever it is plugged into a Mac or Windows computer using FireWire or USB.

Mr. Yeo said, "Apple is in talks to find suitable partners to sell the iPods. We are also looking at PC channels selling computers and notebooks to position the iPod in the Indian market."
