Irrigation bonds' issue likely

HYDERABAD: The Government is planning to issue bonds worth Rs. 3,500 crores to fund irrigation projects. The money is to be spent on ongoing and pending projects, it is learnt. The Government has planned to raise Rs. 43,000 crore from various sources to meet the expenditure and raising the money through bonds was one of the ways being explored. A team, led by the Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Laxmaiah, is in Austria to negotiate a loan of Rs. 3,400 crores with that Government.

No hike in RTC fares: Minister

KARIMNAGAR: The Minister for Transport, S. Santosh Reddy, has clarified that the Government will not increase the APSRTC bus fares in the wake of steep increase in diesel prices. Speaking after inaugurating the RTC `Garuda' bus service from Godavarikhani to Karimnagar at Godavarikhani RTC bus stand along with the Minister for Endowments, M. Satyanarayana Rao, on Tuesday, Mr. Santosh Reddy said though the RTC was having Rs.1,000 crores losses, it would not burden commuters.

IAS officer's wife quits TDP

Hyderabad: D. Revathi, wife of senior IAS officer, D.C. Rosaiah, Commissioner for Archives, has resigned from the TDP objecting to party criticism of the appointment of P. Abraham as Energy Advisor. Ms. Revathi, who was defeated in the Assembly election from Tadikonda in Guntur district, in a letter to the party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Tuesday, said the charges were "baseless."

Appointed APERC Chairman

Hyderabad: The Government on Tuesday appointed K. Swaminathan, a retired IAS officer, who served the State as its chief secretary in the past, as the chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) for a period of three years. Mr. Swaminathan succeeds G. P. Rao, who retired from the Commission's service after the prescribed tenure. Mr. Swaminathan will serve in the Commission till January 27, 2008 (till he attains the age of 65 years).

Express train extended

HYDERABAD: Kachiguda-Sri Satya Sai Prashanthi Nilayam Express (No.7603/7604) will run up to Yeshwantpur till September 1, according to a South Central Railway release. The last service from Kachiguda will be on August 31and the last service from Yeshwantpur will be on September 1.

Devagiri Express cancelled

HYDERABAD: Nizamabad-Devagiri Express scheduled to leave Nizamabad on August 4 has been cancelled following the derailment of Patna-Mumbai Express and landslides on the Central Railway route. Devagiri Express scheduled to leave Mumbai on Tuesday was also cancelled along with Mumbai-Nanded Nandigram Express. The train scheduled to leave Nanded on Wednesday would start late, according to an SCR press release issued here.

Two express trains diverted

New Delhi-Bangalore Karnataka Express which left Delhi on Monday was diverted to run via Itarsi, Nagpur, Ballarshah, Secunderabad, Halakatta, Guntakal and Dharmavaram. Hazrat Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Mangala Express which left on August 2 from Hazarat Nizamuddin was diverted to run via Itarsi, Nagpur, Ballarshah, Warangal, Vijayawada, Gudur and Jolarpettai.

Farmer commits suicide

KARIMNAGAR: A FARMER, R. Venu (30), consumed pesticide and died in Begumpet village of Bejjanki mandal in the early hours of Tuesday. Reports said the farmer had been cultivating cotton for the last four years and had incurred huge losses due to the failure of crops. He is survived by wife and a daughter.

Engineering student run over

NELLORE: An engineering student, A. Venkataramanaiah, died on the spot and three others received injuries when a lorry, said to be driven by a cleaner ran over them, ignoring the barricades on the road, near Gudur town, on Tuesday. According to the Gudur rural police, the incident occurred when a batch of students, belonging to Sri Audisankara Engineering College, was coming out of the campus at 2.15 p.m. The thermal ash-laden lorry, going towards Chennai, ran over them.

Rs. 271 crores for family welfare

NELLORE: The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Panabaka Lakshmi, has said that out of an allocation of Rs.7,334 crores for the Ministry, an amount of Rs. 5,000 crores was earmarked towards family welfare. Out of this, the share of Andhra Pradesh was Rs. 271 crores. She was addressing a gathering at the cancer detection centre and hospital on Podalakur road here on Tuesday.

TDP leader's unique protest

KURNOOL: The former Mayor and TDP leader, Bangi Ananthaiah, and his supporters rode donkeys here on Tuesday to protest against hike in petrol and diesel prices. He alleged that the Congress Government which opposed minor corrections in petroleum prices during NDA rule increased the prices abnormally. The rally which reached the Collectorate attracted attention of passers-by.

`Das Munshi should apologise'

VISAKHAPATNAM: The stand of the Union Minister for Water Resources, Priya Ranjan Das Munshi, that Andhra Pradesh had no right over the Krishna water, was unfortunate, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Union Minister, Bandaru Dattatreya, said at a press conference here on Tuesday. For making such a statement the Minister must tender an apology to State farmers, he said.

Motion against MPP chief

ADILABAD: A no-confidence motion against the Telugu Desam Party's Utnoor mandal parishad president, Madavi Ramu, was adopted on Tuesday at a special sitting of the parishad. Eight of the 10 mandal parishad territorial constituency members voted against Mr. Ramu. Mr. Ramu had defected to the TDP after winning the election on the Telangana Rashtra Samiti ticket. The TRS had won nine of the 11 MPTC seats in July 2001. The notice for the motion was given one week ago.

Police hold grama sabha

ADILABAD: The Bellampalli Sub-Division police on Tuesday conducted a grama sabha at Gadalpalli in Tiryani police station limits involving tribals and others from the villages of Ginnedhari, Gadapalli, Sungapur, Koutegaon, Laxmipur and Ralla Kannepalli. Police officers led by Bellampalli DSP Suryaprakash, Tandur CI Tajuddin and Tiryani SI Vijay Kumar gave a hearing to problems faced by the villagers. The villagers wanted a road to Mangi village and power lines to Gadalpalli and a primary health centre at Pangdi Madaram. The tribals also voiced their problem due to tardy implementation of the Land Transfer Regulation 1 of 1970. Mr. Suryaprakash gave an assurance to bring the problems to the notice of the authorities.

Proposals for works sought

ADILABAD: The Adilabad Joint Collector, V. Durga Das, on Tuesday asked officials to prepare proposals for completion of works for which the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajashekhara Reddy, gave assurances during his Pallebata programme in the district. He asked the officials to visit each villager for preparing proposals to get required funding.

Reviewing the progress on works as per the assurances of Dr. Reddy, the Joint Collector said a State-level meting was being held every fortnight at Hyderabad for reviewing the progress on the assurances. The proposals should be submitted at that meeting, he added.

Lok Satta team visits hospital

NALGONDA: A team of Lok Satta activists on Tuesday visited the district headquarters hospital and interacted with patients and doctors to ascertain their problems to mark the occasion of the organisation's foundation day.

The hospital Superintendent, Sureah Kumar, informed to the delegation led by the Lok Satta district secretary, P.Madhusudan Rao, that recruitment of the class four employees was necessary to maintain hygienic conditions in the hospital. The organisation's town president, Keshava Reddy and the district representative, Sashidhar Chandrasekhar, were also present.

Farewell accorded

NALGONDA: The Collectorate staff and the Revenue employees accorded a grand farewell to the outgoing Joint Collector, Muddasani Purushottam Reddy, at a function here on Tuesday.

Mr. Reddy said he was leaving the district with a heavy heart. The Collector, Vijayanand, the new Joint Collector, B.Sridhar, the District Revenue Officer, Chakravarthy and other officers also took part in the programme.

Hostel opened

NALGONDA: The Collector, K.Vijayanand, inaugurated the BC hostel for girls here on Tuesday. He promised to solve the problems in hostels without delay.

The Zilla Parishad chairperson, Keetha Laxmamma, said she would bring to the notice of the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, who is visiting the district in the second week of this month as part of `Rajiv Pallebata', the need for a special hostel for BC girls.

The Joint Collector, B.Sridhar, the municipal chairperson, P.Venkata Narayana Goud, and the district BC welfare association president, Ramaraju, took part in the programme.

Swami Guruvananda for UN meet

TIRUPATI: ``Brahmarshi Gurujee'' Swami Guruvananda has been invited by the United Nations Organisation (UNO) to deliver a speech at its headquarters on "Peace for the present world'' on August 15.

The Gurujee, who runs an ashram at Durgasamudram on the outskirts of Tirupati, delivered a talk on `Global peace' at the All Religions World Parliament in New York four years ago, according to a release.

Girl run over by bus

CUDDAPAH: An eight-year-old girl, Cheppali Jayalakshmamma, was fatally run over by a private bus near the RCM Church in Chennur on Tuesday. Jayalakshmamma, daughter of C. Balagangaiah, residing in a house adjoining the Church, died instantly when the bus coming from Kurnool to Cuddapah ran over her while she was crossing the road.

Poisonous drink claims life

NELLORE: A child died, while the mother and another child were said to have survived in a bizarre incident in Vadlapudi village of Manubolu mandal on Tuesday. According to police, the mother allegedly administered lemon juice mixed with fertiliser granules to the children. On hearing the news, police rushed to the spot. Further details are awaited.

Dancers arrested

NELLORE: Acting on a tip off, the police in Podalakur, arrested three woman dancers on Monday night in Ayyagaripalem village. The organisers however escaped and a search is on to nab them.

Science fair inaugurated

CUDDAPAH: A science museum will be set up at Cuddapah shortly, said the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, on Tuesday. Speaking after inaugurating a science fair organised by Agastya International Foundation (AIF), Bangalore, at the municipal high school at Gandhinagar here, the Collector said students could acquire knowledge through textbooks as well as experiments and hone up their innate talents by preparing models and exhibit creativity.

Plea for bridge schools

NELLORE: Speakers at the mandal parishad meeting of Tada passed a unanimous resolution, demanding the immediate re-opening of bridge schools in the mandal, which were closed without any notice. It has however been learnt, that the management of schools is likely to be handed to voluntary associations.

Assumes charge

KURNOOL: Mr. Kondaiah Sastri assumed office as Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Parishad here on Tuesday. Mr. Sastri was transferred from Guntur.

SVU professor for global meet

TIRUPATI: G. Rajarami Reddy of Sri Venkateswara University's zoology department has been invited to take part in the 15th biennial meet of the International Society for Developmental Neuroscience'' to be held at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland from August 4 to 7.

He will present a paper on "Lead induced cognitive and non-cognitive dysfunctions in mammals'' at the meet.
