HYDERABAD, AUG. 3. The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has reportedly frowned upon requests for transfers of Government officials that are made by his Cabinet colleagues and party men from time to time. His reaction is a consequence of the flak the Government has attracted on the issue of influence-peddling for official transfers even after July 15, the last date for the consideration of applications for shifting. The State Secretariat and other offices had overflowed with applicants seeking out Ministers for recommendation until then, much to the embarrassment of the Government.
`Respect the deadline'
The Chief Minister made it clear to Ministers that the July 15 deadline had passed and there was no question of entertaining requests for transfers now. Dr. Reddy pointed out to Ministers who were pressing for transfers that he himself had resisted pressures and scrupulously avoided violating the deadline. A good Government must respect the norms it had laid down, he reportedly told them. Sources said the Chief Minister had rejected requests by Cabinet Ministers to extend the July 15 deadline. A senior Minister had even picked an argument with the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Jannat Hussain, on this issue, saying he would be unable to withstand the pressure of the requests for transfers. However, Dr. Reddy is reported to have asked officials not to allow any scope for ambiguity on his resolve not to extend the deadline.
