SALEM, AUG. 3 . The Labour department has taken the initiative to distribute stitched uniforms to child labourers who were rescued from bondage and rehabilitated in special schools in Salem district. The headmasters, who had provided free books and notebooks, pointed out that it would appear odd if the children did not wear uniforms. Accepting the suggestion, the department officials sought the assistance of philanthropists, according to G. Mahalingam, Labour inspector. The managements of the Lakshmi Vilas Bank and the ARRS firm agreed to sponsor the uniforms. Last evening, 35 child labourers received uniforms from the Collector, A. Sukumaran. Another set of uniforms would soon be provided to each children, said Mr. Mahalingam. Flashing smiles, the children returned to schools.
