NEW DELHI, AUG. 3. S. P. Agarwal, Director General of Health Services, and the former Health Minister, C.P. Thakur, were among the 54 eminent personalities who received the Dr. B. C. Roy National Awards today from the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Dr. Agarwal, neuro-surgeon, was given the `Eminent Medical Person Award' for 2002 for his contribution to clinical and public health. He was instrumental in containing the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic last year. He also organised quick responses to control the plague in 2002 and played a crucial role in increasing the coverage of the TB control programme. Besides Dr. Thakur, Dr. S.K. Sama from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr. G. Venkataswamy from Madurai, Dr. Govind Swarup from Pune, Dr. Gourie Devi from Delhi, Dr. T. R. Anantharaman from Gurgaon, and Dr. Obaid Siddiqi were the other recipients in this category. The award carries a citation, a silver salver and Rs. 1,00,000 in cash. Twelve people received awards in the `Eminent Medical Teacher' category. They include Dr. K. K. Talwar from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. Mukkai Kesavan Lalitha from the Christian Medical College, Vellore, Dr. Jai Dev Wig from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, Dr. Rakesh Tandon from Delhi and Dr. C. V. Bhirmanandham from the MGR Medical University, Chennai. Dr. Abraham G. Thomas from the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. Ashok Panagariya from the SMS Medical College and Hospital, Jaipur, and Dr. Saroj Choormani Gopal from the Banaras Hindu University were among those who received awards in the `Development of Specialities' category. Dr. Sanjiv Malik and Dr. A. K. Kesanna from Delhi were among the 11 who received the award in the `Socio Medical Relief' category. Two persons received the `Silver Jubilee Research Awards' and six, including AIIMS' Dr. D. N. Rao and Dr. S. K. Agarwal from the Maulana Azad Medical College, got the `Hari Om Ashram Alembic Research Awards'.
