By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, AUG. 3. The first batch of the indigenously-designed and developed main battle tank, Arjun, will roll out of the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) at Avadi, near Chennai, on August 7.

The Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, will hand over the first five tanks to the Chief of the Army Staff, General N.C. Vij, at a ceremony on the HVF premises.

The tank, which will be the mainstay of the Army, was designed and developed by scientists and technologists of the Combat Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), Avadi, under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

According to a Defence Ministry press release, MBT Arjun had a high degree of mobility, superior firepower and excellent protection. Ten more tanks are in various stages of production and would be delivered to the Army as per schedule, the release said.
