Stay sought on visit

NEW DELHI AUG. 3. The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Union Government, Prasar Bharati and nine others on an application by the Programme Staff Welfare Association of All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD) seeking a stay on the visit of an AIR-DD team to Athens for coverage of the Olympic Games beginning on August 13.

Issuing the notices for August 6, Justice Manmohan Sarin asked the respondents to explain in their replies allegations in the petition filed by Parmod Mehta, President of the Association, that there had been irregularities and discrimination in the selection of the team.

The petitioner through his counsel, M.K. Bhardwaj, submitted that the team slated to leave the court for Athens on 10 needed to be restrained, as its members had been selected arbitrarily.

He further submitted that not all eligible programme personnel of Doordarshan and AIR were given opportunities to prove their worth for selection in the team. He alleged that the team was selected in an arbitrary manner at the instance of some higher officials.

The matter will now be taken up for hearing on August 6.
