Another day of waterlogging, traffic jams and power cuts

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, AUG. 3. The heavy rain that lashed Delhi for the second consecutive day today resulted in massive waterlogging and unscheduled load-shedding across the city. It also caused traffic jams at major intersections.

While water from overflowing drains entered residential premises in several colonies in East Delhi, North Delhi and North-West Delhi, many had to go without electricity for long hours at a stretch.

The power cuts, top discom officials said, were due to rainwater seeping into their electricity distribution system. They said it would take time to restore the power supply.

While rainwater entered a large number of houses in Model Town, at least four buildings -- one each in Gokulpuri, Anand Parbat, Old Rajinder Nagar and Khajuri Khaas -- collapsed due to the heavy rain over the past two days.

However, there were no reports of any casualty or injury, the MCD said.

Complaints of waterlogging were also received from South Extension, Defence Colony, Jangpura, Kalkaji, Matia Mahal, Chawri Bazaar, Shalimar Bagh, Pusa Road, Wazirpur, Mayapuri, Yamuna Vihar, I. P. College, Mukherjee Nagar, Tilak Nagar, Pandav Nagar, Punjabi Bagh, Lajpat Nagar, Inderpuri, Trilokpuri and Kalyanpuri.

Massive waterlogging and poor distribution network resulted in power cuts in large parts of the Capital. Residents in several areas including parts of Karol Bagh, Anand Parbat, Military Road, Punjabi Basti, Bapa Nagar and Arya Samaj Road, complained that they had no electricity for over 40 hours at a stretch.

"The BSES has refused to register our complaints," said Dharmendra Dua, a resident of Gurudwara Road in Karol Bagh.

Residents of Jahangirpuri, Mangolpuri, Bhalaswa, Rohini, Azadpur, Pitampura, Model Town, Shalimar Bagh, Sanjay Enclave and Adarsh Nagar complained of 12 hours of power cuts. Several colonies of Mayur Vihar-II, Khichripur, Kondli, New Kondli and parts of Vasundhara Enclave and Kalyanpuri also experienced power cuts.

Meanwhile, the BSES conceded that there was no electricity supply for two hours in Rajouri Garden, and three hours each in Jamia and Dilshad Garden. Power cuts also resulted in a water crisis in these areas, officials said.
