According to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications, helmets should meet safety standards in terms of their composition and testing. The shell should be non-metallic with protective padding of expanded polyurethane foam or polyethylene. The retention system material for the chinstrap and the headband should be sweat resistant, non-irritant and should not cause skin disease. The strap should not be less than 20 mm wide.
