HYDERABAD, AUG. 3. The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) is planning to set up a dedicated laboratory of international standards for testing scheduled chemicals which are prohibited under chemical weapons convention and join a select group of nations which have such a facility. Talking to reporters on the eve of the completion of the year-long diamond jubilee celebrations of the institute, IICT's director, J.S.Yadav, said the proposed laboratory would require an investment of Rs. 5 crores for the equipment and building and the Ministry of Defence would be approached in this regard.
Thirteenth facility
The IICT has proposed to set up the dedicated laboratory as it was on the verge of getting "designation status" from The Netherlands-based Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) having passed two of its stringent proficiency tests. The laboratory would be the 13th such facility worldwide.
