BANGALORE, AUG. 3. If you are influential and can pull strings, can you do anything and get away with it? Not always, as the residents of 38th Cross in Eighth Block of Jayanagar proved here today. The agitated residents uprooted six `no-parking' signs put up by the traffic police allegedly under the influence of a local businessman, near his house.

Holding placards, they gathered in front of his house and raised slogans against him.

The businessman, it is alleged, recently got demolished a two-storey building housing shops. He reportedly tried to get some trees cut, again thwarted by the vigilant neighbours.

`Unfair fine'

What is more, the residents were even slapped a "fine of Rs. 200" if they parked their vehicles in front of their houses as it was a `no-parking' zone.

After repeated complaints to the Deputy Commissioner of Police and the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Commissioner, police removed the signboards a few days ago. But the next day, the road signs popped up right there.

"It was a peaceful locality until the businessman came here two years ago," said. Umesh Babu, Director, N.S.V.K. Dental College, a resident. The businessman even had plans to shift the bus stop, which is close to his residence. But the plans were foiled when R. Yuvaraja, general secretary of the Karnataka State Backward Classes Division, protested.

"If the businessman continues to get his share of support from the officialdom, the residents will resort to further action," said B. Shreepathy Rao, national general secretary of the Janata Dal (United).

H.K. Venkataswamy, Inspector of J.P. Nagar Police Station, and Nagendra Kumar, Traffic Inspector of Jayanagar, are "hopeful" of finding a solution.

Later, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ramasubbu, and the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Muni Venkattappa.
