HYDERABAD, AUG. 4. The Telugu Desam Party has urged the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to seek the resignation of the Union Minister and Telangana Rashtra Samiti president, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, in the wake of the issue of a non-bailable warrant against him by a magistrate of the Hyderabad Fifth Metropolitan Court for his alleged involvement in a cheating case. The TDP's alliance partner, BJP, has also demanded Mr. Rao's dismissal from the Cabinet. Putting forth the party's demand at a press conference here on Wednesday, the TDP general secretary, R. Prakash Reddy, and spokesperson, R. Chandrasekhar Reddy, MP, recalled Mr. Singh's action in seeking the resignation of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader, Shibu Soren, following the issue of a warrant against him.
`False promise'
The TDP leaders alleged that the TRS president had `cheated' applicants for 107 party Assembly ticket by collecting Rs. 10,000 each from them but put up nominees only for 42 seats in alliance with the Congress. They also charged Mr. Rao with cheating people promising separate Telangana prior to the Assembly elections. They recalled that the TRS leader was allegedly involved in a `foreign job racket' when he was in the Youth Congress by collecting money from hopefuls promising them employment but failed to keep his word. The Telugu Desam leaders asked Mr. Rao to respect the law and resign to the post of Union Minister.
`Dubious distinction'
Meanwhile, the State BJP president, N. Indrasena Reddy, accused the TRS leader of `swindling' lakhs after collecting Rs. 10,000 each from the TRS ticket hopefuls prior to the Assembly elections. He said no Minister had previously faced a cheating case in the State. "Mr. Rao has brought disrepute to the State and hurt the sentiments of people by collecting money and by misleading them by promising Telangana State," Mr. Reddy said, adding that persons like Mr. Rao cannot achieve Telangana.
