Corporates set to go green

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, AUG. 4. About 15 corporate houses in the country, including the ITC, have decided to go for green buildings, drawing inspiration from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) - Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre (GBC) -- which was recently inaugurated by the President, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, here. It is the only building outside the U.S. to get the coveted "platinum rating" for resource conservation.

Addressing a press conference, R. Parasu Raman, Vice-Chairman, World Green Building Council and Chairman of Indian Green Business Council, said the green building industry in the country was poised for a quantum jump with more corporates evincing keen interest. The industry's potential was estimated at Rs. 750 crores by 2007.

Spurt in demand

In the coming years the demand would go up with indigenous manufacture of certain green building equipment picking up. These are now being imported, thereby pushing up the cost by 10 to 15 per cent. But, this additional cost would not be a burden as the savings on energy and water would work out to 30 to 50 per cent, he said.

International meet

In view of the increasing acceptance of the concept, the CII- Sohrabji Godrej GBC will organise a mega international event, "Green Building Congress 2004", here from August 26 to 29, to throw light on the latest trends in green buildings.

Twenty international experts including key board members of World Green Business Council, US Green Business Council, China, Japan, UK, UAE and Taiwan would participate.

The Congress includes an international conference on green buildings on August 27 and 28, international exhibition on green buildings from August 26 to 29 and a seminar on "green homes" focusing on domestic sector on August 29. The objective is to sensitise the construction fraternity to the importance of energy and water conservation.
