Commonwealth writers'

triennial inaugurated

Hyderabad: Nations are not merely pieces of land marked out by lines on the map, but an `emotionally real' entity built through collective imagination, said the Governor, S.S. Barnala, in his inaugural address to the 13th Triennial of Commonwealth Writers here on Wednesday. The theme of the conference is "Nation and imagination: the changing Commonwealth."

Literature, therefore, has a significant role to play in building the nation in the minds of people, he said. While a nation gives a sense of identity as well as economic and political security to its people, aggressive nationalism had caused much havoc through wars and imperial expansions, he noted and called upon the participants of the triennial to bring out the complex and contradictory processes of the `nation'. The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Bruce Bennet from the University of New South Wales, Australia.
