ALAPPUZHA, AUG. 4. The former Pandalam MLA, C. Kesavan, died at a private hospital near Mavelikara after a brief illness at 3 a.m. today. He was 71. Mr. Kesavan, State vice-president of the Kerala State Karshaka Tozhilali Union (KSKTU), the agricultural labourers' wing of the CPI(M), was Alappuzha district secretary of the CPI(M) from 1997 to 2001. Family sources said Mr. Kesavan developed an uneasiness and chest pain early this morning and was taken to a private hospital at Chettikulangara, near Mavelikara. The death occurred there. Mr. Kesavan's body was taken to the Chethu Tozhilali Union Office in Alappuzha and placed there for the public to pay their homage. The cremation was held on the premises of his house at Pallikkal in the district in the evening. Those who paid homage to the departed leader included the CPI(M) leader, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, MLA, and K. Chandran Pillai, K.S. Manoj and C.S. Sujatha, MPs. Mr. Kesavan had been elected to the Assembly three times from Pandalam 1980-82, 1987-91 and 1991-96. Known as a staunch loyalist of the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, in the CPI(M), Mr. Kesavan had been a State committee member of the party for several years. Though he had been elected to the CPI(M) State committee in the last party elections, he was removed from the post following allegations of factionalism in the elections.
