CHITRADURGA, AUG. 5. A. Manjuanath of the Congress and Mahadevamma Kannappa Nayak of the Janata Dal (Secular) were elected president and vice-president, respectively, of Hiriyur Town Panchayat on Wednesday. As the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) have 9 members each in the 23-member body, the votes of the four independents (one seat vacant) were important. Mr. Manjunath enlisted the support of two members of the Janata Dal (S) and two independents and won the election with 14 votes in his favour and 9 votes against. Ms. Nayak of the JD (S) was elected unopposed as vice-president, which was reserved for Scheduled Tribe woman category. She is the only Scheduled Tribe member in the panchayat. There was an objection to the candidature of Mr. Manjunath. A few members said that according to his school records, he had availed himself of the benefits due to Scheduled Tribes and, therefore, was not eligible to contest for the post of president, which was reserved for a BCM (A) candidate. Mohammed Sadiq, tahsildar and election officer, overruled the objection as Mr. Manjunath was elected from the BCM (A) category. Mr. Manjunath was the vice-president during his first tenure.
