Centre reviews States' efforts to solve naxal problem

NEW DELHI, AUG. 5. The Centre today reviewed the efforts and strategies adopted by the naxal violence-affected States, stressing upon the fact that the problem has to be addressed on both security and socio-economic development fronts.

Steps taken by the Andhra Pradesh Government for a dialogue with the People's War came up for discussions during the 15th meeting of the Coordination Centre on naxal problem, presided over by the Union Home Secretary, Dhirendra Singh.

Decisions on strengthening of intelligence gathering and sharing mechanism by the violence-affected States, mounting of coordinated and sustained intelligence-based anti-naxal operations were taken. It was emphasised to strengthen delivery systems for effective implementation of development schemes in the affected areas.

Official sources said there was a view that efforts should be made to solve the problem through talks within "well-defined guidelines.'' Senior officials from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal attended the meeting.
