Jail for French national
Pondicherry Aug. 5. A French national, Pappa alias Keim Didier Phillippe Maurice (59), has been sentenced to three-year rigorous imprisonment under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code for paedophilia. Yesterday S. Isvarane, judicial magistrate II of Pondicherry, also imposed on him a fine of Rs. 5,000; in default he should undergo a three-month simple imprisonment. The magistrate sentenced him to one-year simple imprisonment under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, 1946, read with Section 3 (2) (e) of the Foreigners Order Act 1948 and imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000, in default to a three-month simple imprisonment. A release from the Superintendent of Police (CID), V. Vijayakumar, today said the sentence was suspended till September 1. In January 2002, a complaint was registered that the French national was indulging in paedophilia activities with streetchildren. He had come to India without proper immigration clearance, the release said.
4 killed as car rams lorry
Coimbatore Aug. 5. Four persons were killed and three others including a pregnant woman from Nallurpalayam sustained injuries when a car rammed a stationary lorry at Krishnapuram near Kamanaickenpalayam on Palladam Road in the small hours today. According to the police, Lakshmi (24), who was in labour, was being taken to a Palladam hospital when the accident occurred. The car driver, Dhandapani alias Mani (34), Lakshmi's father Manthiri and their relative Chinnamani were killed on the spot. Lakshmi, who sustained grievous injuries, was delivered of a stillborn male child in the hospital. The baby was killed in the impact of the collision, doctors said. While Lakshmi is said to be in a critical condition, her husband Veeran died in hospital. In another accident, driver Basheer of Malappuram in Kerala died on the spot, while cleaner Ajees and loadman Madhu sustained injuries when their lorry, in which they were going to Madurai from Palakkad, fell into the Amaravathy canal at Krishnapuram near Udumalpet after ramming the parapet wall.
Triplets for cradle centre
Dharmapuri Aug. 5. A woman handed over her triplets, all female, to the Cradle Baby Centre at the Dharmapuri General Hospital yesterday. According to hospital sources, Vasantha, wife of Raghupathi, was delivered of the children a few days ago. The couple already have two daughters.
Cash relief ordered
CHENNAI AUG. 5. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today ordered release of Rs. 50,000 each to the next of kin of five persons who were killed in three accidents. In a statement here, she said the cash relief would be distributed from the Chief Minister's General Relief Fund. P.K. Sampath, a road inspector, succumbed to the injuries he sustained when he fell from the terrace of the Integrated Sanitary Complex at Keezhkolathur in Tiruvannamalai district on July 19. He was taking measurements of the building. Struck by lightning, Palani of Kattunellur in Tiruvannamalai district died on July 20. He was engaged in desilting a drainage canal at Chintadripet here. Chinna Ramiah, Sampath and Kirankumar died following emission of poisonous gas as they were cleaning a septic tank on the premises of a college hostel at Sholinganallur in Kancheepuram district on July 21. She expressed her condolences to the bereaved families.
Teachers' meeting postponed
CHENNAI AUG. 5. A general council meeting of the Tamil Nadu Aarambapalli Asiriyar Kootani, scheduled for August 7, has been postponed to August 21 at Tirunelveli. The procedure adopted by the Government to recruit 23,000 teachers would be discussed. The organisation would undertake a survey in schools of the student-teacher ratio that would exist even after the recruitment of 23,000 teachers and of the vacancies in the institutions, says a release.
UPASI meet on September 7
Udhagamandalam Aug. 5. The 111th annual conference of the United Planters Association of Southern India (UPASI) will be held at Coonoor on September 7. The Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Kamal Nath, will be the chief guest. The Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, E.V.K.S. Elangovan; the Union Minister of State (independent charge) for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Oscar Fernandes, and the Nilgiris MP, R. Prabhu, will participate, the UPASI president, B. B. Medaiah, said in a press note here. The conference would be preceded by a scientific session exclusively for tea members and a combined session on ``Inter-planting'' for other members on September 6. It would be followed by a commodity outlook session, chaired by Abhijit Sengupta, Additional Secretary, Commerce. Presentations would be made by the chairmen of the Tea, Coffee, Rubber and Spices boards. An UPASI Industrial Exhibition would be held during September 6-7.
Bomb hoax
PERAMBALUR AUG. 5. Panic gripped the parents of students of two schools at Jayamkondam today, following rumours that a bomb had been planted in one of them. The police said a higher secondary school received an anonymous call this morning that a bomb was planted on the campus, and it would explode at any time. The school authorities alerted the police. The police combed the premises, but found no explosives.
Gowda in Kumbakonam
THANJAVUR AUG. 5. Former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda reached Kumbakonam today on a personal visit. He offered worship at Sarangapani and Chakkarapani Temples. Mr. Gowda will visit Swami Malai and Alangudi Temples on Friday, official sources said. Earlier, he had darshan at the Sadasiva Brahmendral Temple at Nerur in Karur district.
Works inspected
THANJAVUR AUG. 5. The Tourism Secretary, V. Ramadoss, on Wednesday inspected works being executed in the district for improving amenities for tourists. He inspected the construction of a community hall, parking lots and rest rooms, at a cost of Rs. 34 lakhs at Suryanar Koil, Thingalur and Kanjanur.
Eye camp
THANJAVUR AUG. 5. A total of 1,055 people were screened at a free eye camp organised here recently by the Lions Club of Kumbakonam. Of them, 460 were selected for cataract surgery and sent to Aravind Hospital in Madurai.

TIRUCHI AUG. 5. The level in the Mettur dam stood at 76.25 feet today. The inflow was 8, 738 cusecs, and there was no discharge.

DINDIGUL AUG. 5. The Collector, S. Murugaia, today ordered closure of three bars functioning near the IMFL sales outlet operated by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation in Vedasanthur taluk. Acting on information, he said the TASMAC Manager, R. Lilly, conducted a surprise raid at Vedasanthur and detected unauthorised bars functioning adjacent to the IMFL shops.
Road roko
Tuticorin Aug. 5. Traffic on the New Road at Kovilpatti was hit for 30 minutes when some women staged road roko. The agitation was withdrawn after officials supplied water in lorries to areas in ward No 11.
Dies after consuming liquor
ERODE AUG. 5. One person died and another was admitted to the Erode Government Hospital in a serious condition after they consumed liquor. According to police, Seerangasamy of Tirupur came to a hotel on Kangeyam road, Chennimalai, this evening and gave a bottle of brandy to the hotel owner, Duraisamy (55). (Seerangasamy is a close friend of Subramaniam, brother of Duraisamy.) Duraisamy and his friend, Raju (32) of Ottapalayam had the drink. Minutes later, Duraisamy fell down and died and Raju swooned. Police suspect that Seerangasamy might have administered poison in the liquor and are searching for him.
Killed
ERODE AUG. 5 . A person killed his daughters at Siruvalure, Gobichettipalayam taluk, today. According to police, Sakunthala, wife of Sengottian (35) a toddy-tapper of Pondicherry, eloped with her lover. A frustrated Sengottian administered poison to his daughters, Kalaivani (12) and Thilagavathi (10), and consumed some himself. The girls died at the Gobichettipalayam Government Hospital and Sengottian is undergoing treatment.
Suicide
Dharmapuri Aug. 5 . A 30-year-old man died after consuming poison at Papparapatti here on Wednesday. Police said that Murugesan, son of Govindan, could have committed suicide following family dispute. The victim was admitted to the Dharmapuri General Hospital where he died.
Arrested
Dharmapuri Aug. 5 . The Kambainallur police arrested one person on Wednesday for demanding dowry. Police said that Jayavelu (28) harassed his wife Kamsala (22) for more dowry. Following this, Kamsala lodged a complaint at the station.
