MASON, AUG. 6. Defending champion Andy Roddick overwhelmed 15th-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament. Eleventh-seeded Andre Agassi beat No. 17 Juan Ignacio Chela 6-3, 6-3. Among the other third-round winners were three other former No. 1s Marat Safin, Lleyton Hewitt and Carlos Moya.
Leander-Mahesh survive
Eighth-seeded Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi survived a scare in recording a 6-7(6-8), 7-6(7-4), 7-5 victory over Frantisek Cermak and Leos Friedl of the Czech Republic in the doubles pre-quarterfinals. Sharapova loses Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova was eliminated by Vera Zvonareva 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 while former champions Amelie Mauresmo and Jennifer Capriati advanced to the Rogers Cup quarterfinals in Montreal on Thursday.
Navratilova out
Martina Navratilova borrowed everything racket, clothes, shoes, even glasses to play in the Nordic Light Open in Stockholm on Thursday, and it was all for naught. Navratilova's missing gear was in a bag which didn't show up at Stockholm's Arlanda International Airport after her flight from London on Wednesday, and she and Elena Tatarkova of Ukraine lost their first-round doubles to Italians Maria Elena Camerin and Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 7-5.
