PATHANAMTHITTA, AUG. 6. In an attempt to resolve the ongoing crisis in the medical and engineering educational sectors in the State, K.K. Nair, MLA, has called for a review of the fee structure. In a statement here today, Mr. Nair said that the fees for the engineering and MBBS courses for the merit seats in both the Government and self-financing colleges should be fixed at Rs. 12,500 and Rs. 25,000 respectively and this must be made applicable to all categories.
Cess
According to him, the Government should also permit the private college managements to collect a cess for a fixed amount from the students who have been admitted in the management quota. He said that self-financing medical and engineering college managements should be permitted to charge an additional amount of Rs. 15,000 and Rs 7,500 respectively towards the cess. The MLA said that 10 per cent of the seats in medical and engineering colleges in both the Government and self-financing sectors should be reserved for the economically backward sections of society. He said that the Government should bear their tuition and hostel fees as in the case of the 20 per cent SC/ST reservation quota.
Education grant
Mr. Nair urged the banking institutions to set apart a certain percentage of their profit to be distributed as education grant to the meritorious students belonging to the economically backward sections.
