Be bold, Governor tells farmers

By Our Correspondent

MAHABUBNAGAR, AUG. 6. The Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, has appealed to farmers not end their lives in desperation and advised them to take the life as a "challenge."

Mr. Barnala was addressing a meeting of self-help groups and families of farmers who had committed suicide at Annasagar in Bhootpur mandal on Friday. "By committing suicide, a farmer will not be rid of his debts. The burden will shift to his family. Suicide will not solve the problem. You face it and fight it; only cowards commit suicide," he said.

The Governor asked farmers to imagine the worst-case scenario - accumulation of debt - and said it would only lead to "legal problems." He told them to face the situation boldly.

Need for water

Mr. Barnala said though the land in Mahabubnagar district was fertile, it lacked water.

"The State has understood the problem behind the backwardness of the district and is determined to undertake all pending irrigation projects, with the help of which about 6 lakh acres of additional land will be brought under cultivation," he said.

Ex-gratia distributed

The Governor distributed assets worth of Rs 30.14 lakhs to 89 beneficiaries, including ex gratia to 11 families of farmers who had committed suicide.
