Cloudy sky

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW, AUG. 6.AUG. 6.AUG. 6 The weatherman has forecast a generally cloudy sky with possibility of rain or thundershowers in some parts of the Capital on Saturday.

On Friday, Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 33.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 28 degrees Celsius. Palam recorded a maximum of 33.2 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 28.2 degrees. A trace amount of rainfall was recorded at Sadarjung, while no rainfall was recorded at Palam.

The maximum and minimum humidity recorded at Safdarjung was 85 and 65 per cent. At Palam, the maximum and minimum humidity was recorded at 82 and 63 per cent respectively.

DUTA strike on Monday

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW, AUG. 6.AUG. 6.AUG. 6 The Delhi University Teachers' Association has called for a one-day strike by teachers of Delhi University this coming Monday, August 9, to protest against ``discriminatory'' functioning of the Delhi University Vice-Chancellor, Deepak Nayyar, in cases of re-employment.

Accusing Prof. Nayyar of being ``non-transparent'', the DUTA president, Aditya Narayan Misra, claimed: ``He is not following the University guidelines in cases of re-employment and neither is he being transparent. He is not telling us the reasons for denying admissions. This has caused resentment among the teaching community.''

Man crushed

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW, AUG. 6.AUG. 6.AUG. 6 A 25-year-old man working with a vernacular daily was killed when a private bus ran over him at Connaught Place in New Delhi today. The driver was arrested and the vehicle, which did not have the permit to ply in that area, impounded. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. when the bus ran over Shakti Pad Mehto who died on the spot.

Trapped in debris

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW, AUG. 6.AUG. 6.AUG. 6 A 58-year-old man was killed and a 12-year-old boy sustained injuries after he was trapped in the debris of a water tank that collapsed in a park at Srinivaspuri in South Delhi this evening.

The incident occurred when the park's caretaker-cum-gardener, Kehar Singh, was standing underneath the water tank. The tank of 90,000 litres capacity and located at a height of about 50 feet suddenly caved in. Kehar was trapped under the debris, while one of the three children, identified as Gautam, who were playing nearby sustained minor injuries as the water from the tank fell on him.

Robber held

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW, AUG. 6.AUG. 6.AUG. 6 One of the suspects in a case, in which three criminals had robbed Mukesh Jain of Rs. 8 lakhs in cash, jewellery and two mobile phones at Farsh Bazar in East Delhi on Wednesday, has been arrested from Hapur in Uttar Pradesh and a part of the loot recovered from him. The police have also impounded a motorcycle used in the crime.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West Delhi), Nuzhat Hassan, Mukesh Jain's wife had identified one of the accused as Som Dutt, an ex-driver, whose in-laws lived in Bulandshahr and of late he had been visiting them frequently. While other accused were untraceable, the police arrested Ravi Kumar, a resident of Hapur. During interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in the case.

Arrested

NEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW DELHINEW, AUG. 6.AUG. 6.AUG. 6 A Deputy Director in the Union Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 4 lakhs from a contractor in lieu of protecting him from CBI investigation.

According to the CBI, Rakesh Kumar Dwivedi, Deputy Director (Training), had been threatening a civil contractor and his associate by saying that the CBI had instituted an inquiry against them and asking for bribe. A trap was laid on Thursday and the accused caught while accepting Rs. 4 lakhs as part of the bribe.
