CHITRADURGA, AUG. 7. Master Hirannaiah, noted stage artiste, remembered the role Chitradurga played in shaping his career at a function here on Friday. Participating in the 4th anniversary function of Saraswathi Hi-tech College, he said that he had come to Chitradurga empty-handed in 1959 and the people of the town gave him immense encouragement and help. He recalled the difference of opinion he had with former Chief Minister S. Nijalingappa about his play, "Lanchavathara," and how it was solved legally. "I am only a mouth piece of the common man. Humour helped mock the hypocrisy in society and ridicule the politicians. No one can harbour hatred because of the good intensions behind it," he said. Master Hirannaiah said that humour should be able to cleanse the mind and the heart. B. Thipperudrappa, humour writer, rued the decline of values in society. "Humanity has disappeared. Running after money has taken a toll on harmony and happiness. Humour mingled with reason can make a man happy and content," he said. H. Hanumanthappa, former member of the Rajya Sabha and founder of the college; Vedamurthy Swamy, senior advocate; and A.M. Shivaprasad, principal of the college, were present.
