Olympic Games
Greek swimmer to take athletes' oath
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM,
AUG. 7.
Greek swimmer Zoi Dimoschaki will take the athletes' oath on behalf of all the 10,000-odd participants of the 2004 Olympic Games at the August 13 opening ceremony in Athens.
Incidentally, it will be the third time in a row that a woman will take the Oath.
In 1996, at the opening ceremony of the Centennial Games in Atlanta, it was American basketball player Teresa Edwards who took the oath and at the Sydney 2000 Games, the honour fell to Australian hockey player Rechelle Hawkes.
The modern Olympic oath was originally written by none other than the Games' founding father Pierre de Courbertin. But then, this has been modified over time by the IOC to reflect the changing nature of the sporting competition.
The athletes' oath was first taken at the opening ceremony of the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp by Belgian fencer Victor Boin. The current version of the Olympic oath was introduced in 1999.
