PONDICHERRY, AUG. 7. THE Managing Director of the Indian Potash Limited (IPL) and Chairman of the Fertiliser Association of India, P.S. Gahlaut, has said farmers should be assured of good returns if they took up diversification of crops. Inaugurating a meeting of dealers of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry organised by the IPL's Regional Office (Chennai) here today, Mr. Gahlaut said the country was in a relatively better position in production of vegetables. He said the fertiliser companies and the dealers had a major role to play for the betterment of farmers. Farmers should be taught about the efficient use of fertilizers and the water. Mr. Gahlaut underscored the need for quality power for efficient functioning of the infrastructures established in farm sector and marketing of agricultural produce. He also emphasised that the field staff and farm scientists should be provided with certain amenities to implement the programmes assigned to them. With the population growing by leaps and bounds, there was a need to ensure that food production also kept pace with the rise in population. The Additional Director of Department of Agriculture, R. Sathiyaseelan, said Pondicherry administration had earmarked Rs 3.33 crores for promotion of horticulture. Subsidy was given to farmers taking up rice cultivation under the innovative `System of Rice Intensification' project. For farmers adopting organic and natural manuring, a subsidy of Rs. 5000 per hectare was available from the Government. T. Ramachandran, Chief Manager (Tamil Nadu) of Indian Potash Limited, and V. Sabapathy, Senior Manager (Marketing) spoke.
