dated August 9, 1954: French terms for quitting

France has made a new approach to India for a peaceful settlement of the issue relating to French possessions in India, it was learnt in New Delhi on August 7. It is understood to have put forward three terms for consideration and acceptance by India before France takes a final decision to quit the pockets. The terms are: 1) Maintenance and encouragement of French culture and language in the French possessions; 2) A reasonable compensation for the assets of several French public institutions, developed through centuries of French colonial administration; and 3) An assurance of equal facilities with the regular Indian citizens for the French personnel desiring to stay behind for running non-political institutions.
