Over-the-top proposals

Sir, — This refers to the editorial, `Over-the-top proposals' (Aug. 7), on electoral reforms. Thousands of editorials have been written and hundreds of seminars conducted to suggest measures to deal with criminalisation of politics to no avail. Those opting for a political career must be qualified to do so. And that qualification must not be academic but should be related to their character.

Velavartipati Vachaspati,
Ongole, A.P.

Sir, — The Election Commission's proposals on electoral reforms deserve to be considered as the existing laws have failed to check criminalisation of politics. Amid the all-pervasive degeneration of public institutions, the need to save our democracy is too compelling to let us continue with the status quo in the name of upholding jurisprudential uprightness.

Sajjan Singh,
New Delhi
