Indian science

Sir, — On reading R. Ramachandran's article, `Triple helix & Indian science' (Aug. 7), I was instantly reminded of the Raman Effect for which Sir C. V. Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize.

He first published his basic findings on Raman Spectra, in the Indian Journal of Physics, 1928, Vol. p.399, that gave him priority for the discovery.

Only later did he publish details in the (U.K.), 1929, Vol. 25, p.781.

G. N. Ramachandran, a student of C.V.Raman, was an acclaimed scientist and would perhaps have received the Nobel Prize, for his innovative elucidation of the triple helix structure of collagen had he published in an Indian journal like his mentor did.

Bharat R. Sant,
Hyderabad
