BANGALORE, AUG. 8. It was teamwork at its best for a good cause. Animal Welfare Organisations from across the city and abroad came to the rescue of four camels, which had been brought to Bangalore for slaughter. Animal Rights Fund, Krupa, PfA, PETA, CUPA, and Help In Suffering (HIS), Jaipur, collectively put up a brave fight and saved camels from the cruel clutches of death. On December 10, 2003, Animal Rights Fund received a distress call saying four sick camels were spotted in pathetic condition in Nayandahalli. These camels had walked thousands of kilometres without proper food and water. The ARF rushed its volunteers, who along with the help of the police, took the animals under their care. The doctors at ARF said the camels had lost a lot of fur. Their knees and ankles were bruised. The animals had lost weight. Two camels were profusely bleeding from the nose as the transporter had inserted nails in them to fasten the rope. They had maggot- infested wounds because of injury on the noses. After the ARF rescued the camels, they were treated and had recovered from trauma and shock. ARF got sand to allow the camels to sit without getting injured.
Camels banned
According to the Animal Husbandry Department notification, camels are banned from being brought to Karnataka because they could transmit new diseases to local livestock. But the law is observed more in breach. Camels are regularly brought to the city for slaughter. With timely help from other animal welfare organisations, the Animal Rights Fund hired two trucks and sent the four camels back to their natural surroundings in Jaipur. ARF has appealed for help from the public to bear the expenditure incurred in the rescue of the four camels. The contributions can be sent to: Animal Rights Fund, No. 6, Ranganayaki, 1st Cross, 1st Main, Sripuram, Sheshadripuram, Bangalore 560 020 (ph: 9845171495).
