Militant outfit calls for 72-hour bandh in 2 Assam districts

By Sushanta Talukdar

GUWAHATI, AUG. 8. The banned militant outfit Karbi Longri N.C. Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) in Assam has called for a 72-hour bandh in the two hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills from 5 a.m. on August 14 to enforce the outfit's call for boycott of the Independence Day.

The KLNLF is the erstwhile anti-talks faction of the militant United Democratic People's Solidarity (UPDS), a Karbi militant outfit that signed a ceasefire agreement with the Central Government in 2002. In a statement e-mailed to The Hindu , the KLNLF general secretary, H.S. Timung, said self-determination was the "basic human right" of the Karbi and Dimasa people living in the two hill districts. "The indigenous people of Karbi Anglong and NC Hills should have the right to determine their socio-cultural-economic-political destiny by virtue of establishing their own political institution — Hemprek Kangthim — a separate and free self-determination unit based on internationally recognised criteria and the principle of true notion of self-determination," he said. The rebel leader insisted that "self-determination shall not only ensure political freedom but also economic independence of the Karbi and Dimasa people."
