THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, AUG. 8. The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has accused the Government of helping the cause of the Pushpagiri Medical Society by failing to object to the senior counsel, Harish N. Salve, appearing on behalf of the society in the Supreme Court in the Kerala Self-Financing Professional College Act case. At a press conference here today, the DYFI national president, K.N. Balagopal, said the same Mr. Salve had earlier counselled the Government on the legal stand to be adopted in the High Court against the Pushpagiri society. Mr. Salve had breached professional ethics by appearing both for and against the Government in related cases, he charged. Had the Government brought the "anomaly" to the notice of the Supreme Court, the verdict in the case would have been different. The failure to do so indicated a "nexus" with the Pushpagiri society and the Government owed an explanation to the student community and the public for this alleged duplicity, he said.
To move Bar Council
The DYFI would draw the attention of the Bar Council of India to Mr. Salve's conduct. The latest development had once again exposed the insincerity of the Government's stand in the self-financing colleges issue, the DYFI leader said. An attempt was on to portray the agitation as a violent one and crores of rupees were being spent to crush it, Mr. Balagopal said. About 1,000 cases had been registered and more than a 100 persons remanded in custody in this connection. The DYFI was planning a massive demonstration on August 15.
