Freedom fighters to get free house site pattas

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, AUG. 8. The Pondicherry Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, has announced that free house site pattas would be given to freedom fighters in the Union Territory soon.

Addressing a seminar on Communal Harmony organised by the Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee at Ariyankuppam near here today, Mr. Rangasamy said the Government had already hiked the monthly pension of freedom fighters to Rs. 3000. The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre had approved the hike.

A memorial would be erected at Kizhoor in Villianoor commune panchayat where the historic referendum took place in October 1954 before Pondicherry merged de facto with the Indian Union on November 1 that year. The golden jubilee celebration of the merger would be celebrated with fanfare, he said. The Chief Minister said his Government would ensure that the welfare of the freedom fighters was not ignored as their contribution to liberation of Pondicherry was vital.

The Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, said that as part of the celebration, school children would be given booklets highlighting the freedom struggle of Pondicherry. The All-India Congress Committee general secretary, Salman Khurshid, and its secretary, K.B. Krishnamoorthy MP, the Pondicherry PCC leader, V. Narayanasamy, senior congress leaders, V Vaithilingam and V Balaji, and the Deputy Speaker, A.V. Subramanian, were among those who spoke.

Earlier, Mr. Kurshid and Mr. Krishnamoorthy honoured each of the more than 100 freedom fighters with a shawl.
