Surrendered naxal killed

KHAMMAM: A surrendered naxalite was shot dead by the CPI (ML Praja Pratightana) at Regalla Pedatanda village in the district in the early hours of Sunday.

According to reports, Chinnanna, 35, a former member of the party was chased and killed by ten armed members of the group. Chinnanna was one of the three members of the party who surrendered with weapons in 1999. He became the prime target of the outfit following his surrender.

The relatives of Chinnanna staged a `rasta roko' with his body after post-mortem. They demanded an ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakhs to his family members and free education to all his children.

They relented only after an assurance by the Mandal Revenue Officer of Kothagudem that their demands would be brought to the notice of the Government.

Nurse suspended

Kakinada: The staff nurse of the Government General Hospital, who, by mistake, mentioned in the case sheet that a patient's left eye, instead of the infected right eye, be removed, has been placed under suspension.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Sunday, the Minister for Roads and Buildings, Jakkampudi Ramamohan Rao, said a special investigation team from Sarojini Devi Hospital, Hyderabad, would arrive here on Monday to find out reasons for some patients developing infection after surgery at the hospital.

Meanwhile, he said the hospital Superintendent, S. Rajkumar, submitted a report to the district administration. The Joint Collector, Dana Kishore, who is the in-charge Collector, was asked to take the necessary measures to set right the situation in the hospital.

Doctors welcome court ruling

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors' Association on Sunday asked the Government not to book doctors under 304 A while welcoming the recent Supreme Court ruling that a doctor was not criminally liable for death of a patient due to an error of judgment or carelessness or for want of due caution.

N. Krishna Reddy, president, in a statement issued here said although the Government had issued GO 465 in 1998, it did not provide much relief to doctors. The accountability of a doctor in case of any untoward incident could be established by a departmental enquiry and appropriate action, he said.

`Ikya vedika' flag released

KURNOOL: In a significant development, leaders of Non-Gazetted Officers' Associations from Nellore and Prakasam districts attended the `Rayalaseema Hakkula Ikya Vedika' under the chairmanship of its president, T.G. Venkatesh, here on Sunday. The meeting was organised to interact with NGO leaders from Rayalaseema, Nellore and Prakasam districts. Mr. Venkatesh released the Rayalaseema Hakkula Ikya Vedika flag on which the Nellore and Prakasam district maps found place along with the four Rayalaseema districts. The green flag incorporated the emblem of tiger.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Venkatesh said tiger was adopted as the animal was unique for the Nallamala forest. Also, tiger was the symbol of strength. Mr. Venkatesh explained that people from Nellore and Prakasam district were involved as they shared the common forest, common rivers and common problems.

Cloud-seeding brings rain

HYDERABAD: The Collectors of Prakasam, Kurnool, Cuddapah reported rainfall in several areas following cloud-seeding operations carried out on Sunday.

While there was a drizzle in Prakasam district, Koilakunta, Dornipadu, Sanjamala and Gosapadu (Kurnool) and T. Sundupalli and Chinamandyam (Cuddapah) areas received rainfall, according to an official release.

The release said that Mahabubnagar, Koilakonda (Mahabubnagar district) and Dhone, Veldurthy, Devanakonda and Tuggali (Kurnool) received 1 mm., drizzle, 1mm, 8.8 mm. and 6.2 mm. rainfall, respectively, following cloud-seeding on Saturday.

Reservoir level up

KURNOOL: Irrigation authorities are making arrangements for formal release of water to the Srisailam Right Main Canal (SRMC) from the Srisailam reservoir on Monday. The level in the reservoir is likely to reach the 841 ft or above by Monday which would enable operation of SRMC at Pothireddypadu head regulator. However, the reservoir is likely to reach the comfortable level of 850 ft in three or four days.

On Sunday, the level in the reservoir reached 835.83 ft accounting for a storage of 87.31 TMC. The inflow was recorded at 1,81,440 cusecs. According to information, the release from Alamatti on Sunday too was around 1,78,000 cusecs. The flow at Srisailam will sustain for the next four days even if the inflow falls at Alamatti immediately. Meanwhile, the inflow in the Tungabhadra at the TB dam too was encouraging with the level reaching 1626.70 ft accounting for a storage of 87.663 TMC.

Coop. staff to picket Collectorates

HYDERABAD: Members of the Andhra Pradesh State Agricultural Cooperative Societies Employees' Union, Andhra Pradesh Cooperative Central Banks Employees' Association and Andhra Pradesh Cooperative Bank Employees' Federation will picket Collectorates on August 16 in protest against the Government's decision to do away with about 3,000 employees. In a joint statement issued here on Sunday, leaders of the organisations criticised the previous Telugu Desam Government for removing from service about 3,000 employees of cooperative institutions and to further reduce the number of the employees and their salaries.

The Congress regime, they said, wanted to amend GO 94 issued by the TDP Government and further cut the employees' strength. This was contrary to the promises made by the party prior to the Assembly elections.

Farmer ends life

CUDDAPAH: Kammati Uthaiah (25) of Chagaleru in Vemula mandal committed suicide by consuming pesticide near a graveyard on Saturday.

Police said Uthaiah had incurred debts due to crop failure during the last three years. He is survived by wife, Rajeswaramma, and an infant daughter, Poojitha. The body has been sent to Vempalle Government hospital for a post-mortem.

Transco raid

NELLORE: Vigilance officials of AP Transco, Nellore, are continuing raids in Tada area of the district, following reports about illegal supply of power to certain villages near Tamil Nadu. The officials had earlier detected cable wires used for clandestine supply of power.

NELLORE: D. Umapathi, of Chittoor, assumed charge on Saturday as the Commissioner of Nellore municipality, which did not have a regular Commissioner for one month.

SFI seeks

scholarship hike

TIRUPATI: The Chittoor unit of the Students Federation of India will hold demonstrations throughout the district on August 10 to protest against the "indifferent attitude" of the Government towards the long-pending scholarship issue. The SFI said the Government had not hiked scholarships after 1997.

3 held, cell phones seized

TIRUPATI: Police nabbed a trio, who apparently specialised in lifting camera cell-phones. The police recovered seven instruments from Dilipkumar, Karthik and Sandeep, all aged 17. Of the seven, four were lifted from a local cell-phone shop. The accused would be produced before the magistrate tomorrow.

IOB loan mela

TIRUPATI: The "Dream Home'' housing loan mela conducted by Indian Overseas Bank at Thyagaraja mandapam concluded on Sunday. The chief manager, M. Ramdas, said 120 applications involving an amount of Rs.7 crores were processed at the mela.

TIRUPATI: A new body was elected for the district unit of Treasury and Accounts department's Gazetted Officers Service Association. The new president is D.Jayaram (Chittoor), vice-president - B.Rajendran (Srikalahasti), joint secretary - B.Seetaram (Tirupati), treasurer - B.Venkateswarlu (Chittoor). State council members are B.Surender Reddy (Thottambedu) and S.V.Chalapathi (Madanapalle). P.B.Manjula (Chittoor) and B.Sudhakar (Chittoor) are executive council members.

Dismissed from service

HYDERABAD: The State Government has dismissed from service

E. Venkata Ramana, formerly Mandal Revenue Officer at Jadcherla of Mahabubnagar district, following his conviction by a designated Court on corruption charges.

While working as Senior Assistant in the office of Chief Commissioner of Land Administration in 1994, Venkata Ramana was trapped by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ABC) when he took a bribe of Rs. 300 from the complainant to do an official favour.

The Additional Special Judge for ACB cases, Hyderabad, convicted and sentenced him to undergo one year rigorous imprisonment. Consequent to the conviction, the Government dismissed him from service, according to an ACB press release.

NCC cadets

donate blood

KARIMNAGAR: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets of 9 Andhra battalion, Karimnagar, who are participating in the annual training camp at Malkapuram village on the outskirts of town, have organised a blood donation camp on Sunday.

A total of 52 NCC cadets donated blood on the occasion to the Government civil hospital in the town. The Camp Commandant, A.K. Jaggi, inaugurated the camp.

The cadets of 9 Andhra battalion were also given an opportunity to participate in para-sailing.

Club owners'

meeting

WARANGAL: The town police urged proprietors of all recreation clubs to attend a meeting being convened at the Subedari police station on Monday.

According to the rural DSP, Liaqat Ali Khan, the owners of clubs should attend the meeting will all documents such as registration, bye-laws, membership register and bar license in case the club has a bar.

The meeting aims at streamlining the functioning of clubs.

Killing of stray dogs flayed

WARANGAL: The Kakateeya Kennel Association has strongly condemned the mass killing of stray dogs by the Warangal Municipal Corporation officials.

In a statement issued here, association secretary, V. Ramana Reddy, said the corporation instead of killing stray gods, should have taken remedial measures such as sterlisation, shifting of garbage dumping yards to outskirts and consulting the animal welfare board.
