Rain in Kutch

By Our Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR, AUG. 8. The rain-starved border district of Kutch received welcome showers with almost all the talukas recording 26 to 79 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours.

The flood situation in other parts of Gujarat improved further today with the let up in heavy rains. But the rainfall continued to be widespread with more than 140 talukas having received an average of 25 mm rainfall. Of the 23 talukas in the State so far facing deficiency in rainfall, at least 10 received heavy rains today.

The level at the Sardar Sarovar dam on the Narmada river still stood at 114 metres attracting a large number of people to witness the "lifeline of Gujarat'' overflowing. The authorities said there was no immediate threat to the villages in the downstream but it had not withdrawn the high alert issued two days ago in view of the possibility of more rains in the catchment areas.

In Surat and other flood-affected areas, relief teams have intensified their operations to assist the flood-hit to return to normal life. However, the Minister of State for Railways, Naranbhai Rathwa, who visited some of the affected areas, claimed that the relief operations by the State Government was "inadequate'' and succour was not reaching in time to the needy.
