Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW, AUG. 8 . With the declaration of seven more districts as drought-hit in Uttar Pradesh, the total number of drought-affected districts in the State has risen to 20. Of the 70 districts in the State, the drought-hit districts have received scanty rainfall, which has badly affected agricultural produce. Collection of government revenue has been suspended in these districts till March 31, 2005 and district authorities asked to start relief work immediately. According to a government order last night, the seven districts declared drought-hit were Varanasi, Chaundali, Mainpuri, Kaushambi, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Sonebhadra and Muzaffarnagar. The State Government had declared 13 districts as drought-hit last week. Officials said these districts had been identified as drought-hit after an assessment that the loss of agriculture produce in these areas would be around 50 per cent due to scanty rainfall. UNI
