NEW DELHI, AUG. 8. The monks of Palpung Sherab Ling Monastery who are famous for Tibetan chants and meditation prayers made history when they won the prestigious Grammy award on February 8 this year. To honour these monks, a special function was held at Vigyan Bhavan here this evening which was organised by the 12th Tai Situ Rinpoche and the monastery. The monks who bagged "the best traditional world music album award" in the Grammys this year for their CD titled "Sacred Tibetan Chants: The Monks of PSLM" also gave a performance on the occasion. The monks of this revered monastery represent the people inhabiting the mighty Himalayas and the CD contains the chants of Tibetan, Indian, Bhutanese and Nepalese monks. Winning a Grammy was the last thing on their minds when last year Tai Situ Rinpoche asked them to do recording of the chants like invocation and offering of Mahakala. The Palpung Sherab Ling Monastery located about 60 kilometres from Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh is the seat of the 12th Tai Situ Rinpoche. Rinpoche has authored books like "Way To Go", "Tilopa", "Relative World, Ultimate Mind" and "Awakening The Sleepy Buddha". Architect of the monastery that is now home to 500 monks and nuns, he is widely regarded for his work on peace including the 1989 conference titled "Pilgrimage for Active Peace" that drew eminent religious leaders from every nook and cranny of the world.
