Roll back petrol price hike

Sir, - The hike in petrol and diesel prices is unjust and people have a right to oppose it tooth and nail. The frequent hikes by the Central and State Governments are playing havoc with the commoner.

The price rise is bound to trigger a chain reaction, resulting in a hike in the rates of essential commodities. This has become a regular phenomenon and has the common man at the receiving end. The Government should actively consider a rollback keeping in view the plight of the common man.

A welcome decision

Sir, - There is no denying the fact that India is a secular Republic. But one should not, at the same time, ignore the fact that all communities in the country are not economically equal. I welcome the decision of the Congress Government in the State to extend 5 per cent quota to Muslim minorities, as the latter fully deserve the benefit. Though belated, the move would help foster a sense of belonging among the community.

`Suseela deserves Bharat Ratna'

Sir, - I totally agree with the plea put forth through this column to confer Padma Sri on playback singer, P. Suseela. But Padma Sri is disproportionate to the immense talent of the great singer. The demand, probably, would have sounded reasonable if only it was made way back in 1977, when Suseela celebrated the silver jubilee of her singing career in Hyderabad.

Today, at this stage and age, Suseela deserves nothing less than the nation's highest civilian award -Bharat Ratna. Anything less would tantamount to belittling her achievements.
