Delay in overpass work hits commuters

BANGALORE, AUG. 8. People living in the north-eastern parts of the city have been facing hardship for the past 18 months because of work on a railway overpass on Hennur Main Road at Lingarajapuram. Hennur Main Road links areas such as HRBR Layout, HBR Layout, Karamchand Layout, Kamannahalli and Kalyan Nagar with other places in the city. After work on the railway overpass began in January 2003, things have gone from bad to worse. The project, taken up by East Coast Construction and Industries Ltd. (ECCIL), was to be ready by July 2004. However, only 70 per cent of the work has been completed.

No alternative

What upsets commuters of these areas is that there is no alternative road for them to reach the city early. "Hennur Main Road has been dug up. How are we supposed to travel?" asks Neha Kapadia, a student who commutes from Kammanahalli to Jyothi Nivas College at Koramangala daily. Like others, she has no other option but to use the narrow roads that branch off from Hennur Main Road. The plight of elderly persons living in the Lingarajapuram area is worse. "What if my scooter skids or I break my spine because of the pits?" asks Morris of Lingarajapuram. Many residents of the area complain of respiratory problems because of the dust and pollution.

Shopkeepers affected

Shopkeepers on either side of Hennur Main Road have been badly hit. They say business has come down after work on the project commenced. "The dust gets into shops. Many regulars have stopped coming because they hate using this road," a bakery owner says.

New deadline

Officials of ECCIL now say the railway overpass will be ready by September. The roads in the area will be redone, they add.
