Anand is champion

By Arvind Aaron

MAINZ, AUG. 9. Having won the match with a game to spare, Anand tried to play the Ruy Lopez with the black pieces in game eight once again but Shirov preferred not to and chose an irregular king pawn opening variation and castled queen side at the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz, Germany.

Anand adopted the same tactic and waited for the white to throw in the punches before he could respond. Shirov sacrificed a rook for minor piece and looked for that consolation win. He never succeeded and all he got was a draw after 63 marathon moves by perpetual checks.

Peter Svidler of Russia beat Levon Aronian of Armenia 4.5-3.5 to retain his Chess960 World championship.

Earlier Viswanathan Anand won the match against Alexei Shirov of Spain by 4.5-2.5 after he drew the seventh game in just 27 moves with the white pieces on Sunday. Needing two wins from both games to stay in the match, Shirov could only make a draw with the black pieces.

The game lasted 15 minutes with Shirov remembering the opening lines well in a Ruy Lopez this time. Anand, forced an opposite coloured bishop ending with the white pieces and proposed a draw that was accepted by black.
