ANANTAPUR, AUG. 9. Activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate here today demanding that the State Government sanction scholarships pending for a year. The police resorted to lathicharge when the activists tried to gatecrash into the Collectorate premises. When the police resisted their move, the students pelted stones on the police inviting the lathicharge. The students mostly from private degree and junior colleges took out a rally to the Collectorate and shouted slogans against the Chief Minister for about two hours. They demanded that the district Collector come to them to hear their grievances. When they were told to submit a memorandum to the Collector they refused and tried to gatecrash. The students led by Anjaneyulu, Vishnuvardhan Reddy and others demanded that the Government sanction scholarships to all students who had applied for it in the last academic year. They also sought scholarships to students studying in private colleges. They also demanded that the long term fee of BC, SC and ST students be borne by the Government. Later, the police arrested about a dozen leaders of the ABVP.
