Abraham bows out

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, AUG. 9. Less than two weeks after his appointment, P. Abraham, former IAS officer, has tendered his resignation as Advisor (Power) to the State Government.

Mr. Abraham sent a letter to the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Monday saying that "a vicious and motivated campaign'' was being carried out against him in the media by certain `vested interests'' to tarnish his reputation.

The former bureaucrat, who had served as Chairman of the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB), said he had accepted the Government's offer as he wanted use his long and rich experience in the power sector for the benefit of Andhra Pradesh. In fact, he had even declined to accept any remuneration for the services.

However, he had now decided that he could not continue as Advisor or a member of the committee constituted by the Chief Minister to review power purchase agreements (PPAs) with certain private power developers.

Sources said Mr. Abraham was highly disturbed by the criticism in a section of the media which alleged that he was involved in the finalisation of PPAs of the controversial Enron project in Maharashtra although he was working in the Ministry of Defence when the agreement was negotiated and signed.
