Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, AUG.10. Pondicherry is likely to have 23 Assembly constituencies, against the present 21, if the proposals of the Delimitation Commission are implemented in the near future. But Karaikal would have five constituencies instead of six and Mahe (an enclave of Pondicherry in Kerala), which now has two constituencies, would have only one constituency (with Pallor being sought to be merged with Mahe). Yanam, an enclave of Pondicherry in Andhra Pradesh, would however continue to do with its single Assembly constituency. This was disclosed by V. Vaithilingam (Congress) and A.M. Krishnamoorthy (BJP), who were briefed on the Commission's proposals to delimit Assembly constituencies in Pondicherry. The Lok Sabha MP from Pondicherry and five MLAs from the Union Territory are associate members of the Delimitation Commission. The other Associate members of the Commission are N. Gangadharan and R. Nalamaharajan (both Congress) and S.P. Sivakumar (DMK). The members have also been invited by the Commission to a meeting in Delhi on August 23 to place before it their views and suggestions in response to the proposals. The invitation reached them yesterday. The highlights of the proposal relating to Pondicherry region are that the Raj Bhavan segment would be widened by merging Bussy and Cassicadai constituencies with it, they said. Currently, Raj Bhavan is sandwiched between the Bussy and Cassicadai segments. Two new segments would be carved out of Thattanchavady constituency; they are likely to be Indira Nagar and Kadirkamam segments. Similarly two new segments would come into existence from Lawspet Kurinji Nagar and Kalapet constituencies.
New constituencies
Mangalam and Manaveli are the new constituencies that are proposed. It is proposed to bring Oussudu, a reserved constituency now, under the open list while Nettapakkam, now a general constituency would be a reserved segment. The rechristening of Neravy in Karaikal as T.R. Pattinam is also on the cards. The Neduncadu reserved segment there would be merged with Cottuchery. This arrangement would reduce the total number of constituencies in Karaikal from 6 to 5. Pondicherry and its outlying regions would continue with the same number of constituencies as of now 30.
