Nehru Trophy Boat Race on August 14

ALAPPUZHA, AUG. 10. The 52nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race will be held at the Punnamada Lake here at 2 p.m. on August 14, the Alappuzha District Collector, K.M. Ramanandan, has said.

The Union Minister of State for Tourism, Renuka Choudhury, will be the chief guest at this year's function, the Collector, who is also chairman of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society, said.

The Tourism Minister, P. Sankaran, will preside over the inaugural meeting. The Minister for Culture, G. Karthikeyan, will release a souvenir at the function. The MLA, K.C. Venugopal, will present a memento to Ms. Choudhury. The competition will conclude by 5.30 p.m.

The Minister for Agriculture, K.R. Gouri, will present prizes to the winners.

17 snake boats

The Collector said that 17 snake boats would take part in the competition for the trophy donated by the late Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The competition in the snake boat category is the most important contest in the race. Competitions for other categories of boats including `Veppu', `Churulan', `Iruttukuthi' and `Odi' will also be held.

Cash prize

The winning team in the snake boat category will be given a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh. In addition to this, the winning team will get a permanent trophy and 28 ever-rolling trophies. The teams that enter the finals will also receive prizes. Bonus would be given to all snake boats that participate in the competition, the Collector said. Mr. Ramanandan said that various other programmes would be held in the town from August 11 onwards as a part of the race. A `vanchippattu' competition would be held at the Municipal Ground here at 11 a.m. on August 11. A cultural rally would be held in the town in the afternoon on the same day.

The rally will begin from Bhattathirippurayidom here at 3.30 p.m. Dance performance and other programmes would be organised at the municipal grounds on August 12 and 13 also, the Collector added.
