Uttaranchal
By Our Staff Correspondent
DEHRA DUN, AUG. 10. Baba Mohan Uttarakhandi, the activist who died yesterday on the 38th day of his "indefinite" fast at Benital in Chamoli district, seeking the establishment of a permanent Capital for Uttaranchal at Gairsen, was cremated with full State honours at the confluence of East and West Nayar rivers at Satpuli in Pauri Garhwal district today. The State-wide bandh called by Uttarakhand activists, the Bharatiya Janata Party, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal and Communist Party of India (Marxist) evoked a mixed response in the hills. Life was normal in Hardwar and Udham Singh Nagar. Police detained about 100 people trying to block the Dehra Dun- Shimla road at Sahaspur while most business establishments and educational institutions remained closed in Dehra Dun, Chamoli, Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh, and rural areas of Almora. The Leader of the Opposition, Matwar Singh Kandari, and the former Chief Minister and BJP State president, Bhagat Singh Koshiary, sought the Chief Minister, Narayan Dutt Tiwari's resignation in this regard. "This shows that the Congress Government is least concerned about the welfare or aspirations of the masses", they said. The Congress leader and vice-chairman of the Uttaranchal Rajya Nirman Andolankari Kalyan Parishad, Dhirendra Pratap and former Minister, Kishore Upadhyay, urged the Chief Minister to dissolve the Virendra Dixit Commission set up to suggest a permanent Capital for the State as it had failed to understand the sentiments of the people and not given any recommendation even after three years' of its formation.
