Chautala contests Amarinder's claim

By Our Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH, AUG 10. The Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, today asserted that Chandigarh belonged to Haryana and he would not let anyone claim it.

Mr.Chautala was reacting to the assertion made by his Punjab counterpart, Amarinder Singh, that Chandigarh should be transferred to Punjab according to the Rajiv-Longowal Accord in times to come.

Mr.Chautala also accused Capt. Singh of adopting a dual policy saying that while on the one hand he had got the Punjab Termination of Agreements Bill-2004 passed to nullify all inter-State accords, he was on the other talking of claiming Chandigarh.

He said it appeared that his Punjab counterpart had been playing into the hands of the Congress-led Central Government and making statements to divert the attention of the people from the sensitive issue of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal. Mr.Chautala said that Haryana had always suffered injustice on the inter-State territorial issues after the bifurcation of Punjab. The recommendations of the Punjab Boundary Commission headed by Justice J.C.Shah should be implemented in total and Chandigarh should be transferred to Haryana.
