Rs. 40 crores released for bridge, road repair

By Our Staff Correspondent

HASSAN, AUG. 10. The Government has released Rs. 40 crores for repair of roads and bridges in the State as promised, the Minister for Public Works and Energy, H.D. Revanna, has said.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, he said the funds released would be utilised for taking up immediate repairs of both roads and bridges in the State.

The Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) would take up the integrated development of Hassan city by spending Rs. 12 crores, he said and added that this would come as a loan from the World Bank.

Plan for 14 cities

The Karnataka Municipal Reforms Programme (KMRP) had drawn up a plan to develop 14 major cities in the State, including Hassan, by borrowing loan from the World Bank at an interest rate of 8.5 per cent a year.

The KUIDFC would implement the programme, the Commissioner of Hassan City Municipal Council, B.A. Paramesh, said.

Compensation

To a query on the recent electrocution of a couple in Arkalgud taluk, Mr. Revanna said he had instructed the Superintending Engineers concerned of the electricity supply companies to take steps to prevent such incidents. A compensation of Rs. 2 lakh had been given to the next of the kin of bereaved family. A Junior Engineer and a lineman were suspended pending inquiry in connection with the incident, he disclosed.

New power company

He said the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) would be bifurcated for the supply uninterrupted and quality power to the power consumers. The bifurcation had become inevitable, as the area under MESCOM was huge and difficult to meet the needs of the people. The new company, which would supply power to Mysore, Mandya, Chamarajanagar and Hassan, would be named as Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company. Mr. Revanna said there was no plan to bifurcate the other electricity supply companies in the state. A managing director and director (technical) would be appointed for the new company. As there was pressure from the people of the four districts, the decision to bifurcate MESCOM was taken, he added.

To a question on issuing of bills by MESCOM to the beneficiaries of Bhagya Jyothi Scheme, though it was announced that free power would be given to them and their arrears waived, Mr. Revanna said the Government had so far had not formed guidelines and consultations were on with the Finance Department. A proposal had been prepared to provide basic infrastructure to both Tattekere Ashreya Colony and Housing Board at a cost of Rs. 85 crores, he said.

On the plight of Dalits in Gangooru village, he said the Government was trying to solve the problem. The Deputy Commissioner, K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda, however, refuted the allegation that Dalits of Gangooru had been ostracised.
