Plea against polluting units

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, AUG. 10. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee has filed criminal complaints against 14 hazardous waste generating units for filing false declarations for obtaining authorisation as required under the Hazardous Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989. The DPCC has also ordered their immediate closure and disconnection of electricity and water supply to those units. According to a recent Supreme Court order on hazardous waste management, every unit was required to ensure safe disposal of the hazardous waste and also put up display boards outside their unit. Following the order, DPCC had issued closure directions to all units that had not taken authorisation under the Hazardous Waste Rules. To obtain authorisation, all units were required to file affidavits declaring their waste disposal procedure and also the display boards.

However, while the process of granting authorisation was started, an inspection has revealed that 14 units, with a view to obtaining the required authorisation, had filed false affidavits claiming that they were either not engaged in any industrial activity or that they had compiled with the directions of the Supreme Court. "We sent a team to inspect some of the units that had submitted the affidavits, but we found that 14 of the units had given false affidavits," said member-secretary of DPCC, S.C. Bansal.
