Visakhapatnam
By Our Staff Reporter
VISAKHAPATNAM, AUG. 10. The United Port and Dock Employees Union, affiliated to CITU, has demanded that the Visakhapatnam Port Trust management withdraw the suspension of and chargesheets served on its leaders and those of other trade unions after a recent strike. The honorary president of the CITU union, M.V.S. Sarma, told a press conference here on Tuesday that the union's general secretary, V.S. Padmanabha Raju, was served a chargesheet alleging that he extended support to the strike by Dock Labour Board workers and for criticising the management.
CITU strong
Mr. Sarma wondered whether the VPT management was not aware of labour laws or was under pressure from other trade unions. He criticised the statement of another trade union that the CITU had no strength in Visakhapantam port. "CITU is strong in most of the 11 major ports and strength-wise is third among the five recognised ports trade union federations of the country,'' he claimed. The general secretary of the National Port Trust Employees Union, P.S. Naidu, said his union president, K. Swatantra Kumar, was suspended though he did not make any statements, and the suspension order served on the union secretary, J. Satyanarayana, was withdrawn but he was served a chargesheet. The president of the Janata Port and Dock Employees Union, S. Kanaka Rao, also demanded the withdrawal of suspensions and chargesheets on trade union leaders.
