TIRUCHI, AUG. 10 . The Communist Party of India has urged the Tiruchi Corporation to withdraw the drinking water tax hike in the interest of the residents of the city. A resolution was adopted at a city committee meeting of the party held here today with the former councillor, R. Chakrapani in the chair. Another resolution urged the Corporation not to sever drinking water connection and launch distraint proceedings if the residents did not remit the house and drinking water tax by August 15. It pleaded for extension of the time limit for payment of these taxes. The meeting pleaded with the authorities to operate a few city buses proceeding to Central bus stand from Woraiyur via Arunachalam statue, Holy Cross College in the interest of the office-goers, students etc. Though the construction of the new public toilet at Ponnagar on the Collector's office road had already been completed, it was yet to be thrown open to the public. Moreover, the already abandoned toilet in the area was also creating a health hazard to the residents of the locality. The authorities should immediately demolish the old toilet and declare open the new one. By other resolutions, the meeting pleaded for steps for the widening of Tennur Keezha Chathiram road, desilting the drainage flowing in ward numbers 45 and 41 etc. The district secretary of the party, M. Selvaraj spoke on the salient features of the common minimum programme of the United Progressive Alliance Government. The Town Committee secretary, G. Suresh, and others spoke.
